I saw Hylan several times during my visits to my grandparents, Ben and Bessie Kirkland. I could not tell Hylan and Jack apart, so I called both Hyjack. I saw Hylan whenever he got leave in 1944/45. He once brought us a new style can opener, a whole box of Mounds candy bars and some saccharin. I was there when my grandparents received word that Hylan was missing in action. His ship, USS Twiggs (DD-591)had been sunk by a Japanese torpedo aircraft on 16 Jun 1945. I really missed him. He raised guinea pigs, released pheasants in the surrounding woods (all were killed by feral cats)and he was a joy to be around.
