Sean Patrick Carson was born on July 27, 1980 in Redmond, WA. Sean entered active duty on May 28, 1999 and reported to the Naval Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, IL to complete Boot Camp and Parachute Rigger “A” school. He then reported to his first command, Fleet Readiness Center Southwest, Detachment Point Mugu, CA. Later, while assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Training and Evaluation Unit ONE, he applied and was accepted for EOD training, beginning on November 6, 2007 and graduated as a Basic EOD Technician on January 26, 2009. In May 2009, Sean transferred to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit THREE based in San Diego, CA. Due to his outstanding performance he was assigned to Platoon 3-7-1 supporting Naval Special Warfare (NSW) Squadron FIVE and deployed to Iraq and Bahrain in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom, New Dawn, and Enduring Freedom. Following that successful deployment, Sean was assigned to Platoon 3-3-1 as an EOD team leader and prepared for deployment to Afghanistan. EOD1 Carson selflessly volunteered to fill a critical manpower gap on another Platoon, 3-8-1, and was immediately deployed to Afghanistan supporting NSW Squadron THREE. Initially deploying to Ghazni Province with an element of U.S. Army’s Third Special Forces Group, Sean was shifted to Kandahar Province and conducted combat operations with Charlie Platoon, SEAL Team THREE, and Afghanistan National Army Commandos. Sean was awarded the Bronze Star with “V”, Purple Heart, Army Achievement Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (2 awards), Combat Action Ribbon, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Navy Unit Commendation (2 awards), Navy “E” Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal (4 awards), National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (3 awards), NATO Medal, Expert Rifle Ribbon, and Expert Pistol Ribbon. Sean was a qualified Senior Explosive Ordnance Disposal Warfare Specialist, Military Freefall Parachutist, and both Open and Closed Circuit Diver. Sean Carson was killed in action on August 16, 2012 along with two SEAL team members and four U. S. Army air crew deep inside Taliban territory when the Blackhawk helicopter he was in was shot down by enemy fire. No one survived the crash. The rest of the team on another Blackhawk landed nearby and for five hours engaged the enemy while recovering the remains of our fallen warriors. Petty Officer First Class Sean Carson is survived by his loving wife, Nicole, their four year old daughter, Leila, his mother Fran, father Pat, stepmother Barbi, and three brothers, Jeremy, Nik, and Matt.
