Private Jack Murphy Ackerman was a member of the 5th Infantry Regimental Combat Team. He was taken Prisoner of War and was killed during the Sunchon Tunnel Massacre on October 20, 1950. The U.S. Government lists his date of death as November 4, 1950 and it is also on his headstone, because that date was reported to his mother Gertrude Henderson Rautenberg by the US Army, and also his son Karl Douglas Ackerman and ex-wife Lucille Nickola Raffoul. There is a book called Sunchon Tunnel Massacre Survivors by Pat McGrath Avery and Joyce Faulkner which tells the truth of his death. His name is mentioned in the book on page 231, Appendix V - Victims of Sunchon Tunnel Massacre. At the time Private Ackerman enlisted in the Army he was living in Flint, Genesee County, Michigan. Private Ackerman was stationed in Sapporo, Japan and was in the first unit, Task Force Smith, which was deployed to South Korea when the Korean War broke out. He is buried in Flint Memorial Park Cemetery in Mt. Morris, Michigan. Private Ackerman was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
