  • George Poshefko was a Marine stationed at Hickam Air Field in Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941, when Japanese carrier planes attacked Pearl Harbor. He survived a strafing run by hiding behind a tree. He was later killed by a sniper’s bullet while attacking a machine gun post on Guadalcanal on Jan. 10, 1943. He lies in Punchbowl Cemetery on the island of Oahu. Distinguished Service Cross

    (Citation Needed) - SYNOPSIS: Private George C. Poshefko (ASN: 0-6885987), United States Army, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 10 January 1943, at Guadalcanal, in the Solomon Islands. Private Poshefko's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
