At 19, Derek enlisted in the US Army to fulfill his patriotic duty. He served with the 2-35 INF DIV in Afghanistan 2004-2005 & Iraq 2006-2007. Nicknamed "D-Rob",he was know as a jokestor, for his quick-wit and was in every way a "Californian". He completed over 200 missions in Iraq. His Captain shared this, "I remember SGT. Roberts walking by the First Sergeant, and with his hat curled low and his sideburns looking just a bit too long-but were not-perhaps just right on the verge of the standard-right where he wanted them. So you could say he pushed the edge a little. Those were some of his leadership qualities that earned him his stripes." His giving the ultimate sacrifice for freedom speaks to his superb character, professionalism, and dedication to the mission. Derek was devoted to his religion and his family. As a Mormon, he believed in the eternal nature of Family and Friends, giving those who love him, great comfort and hope!
