    Since he was a child, he had always wanted to be a Marine. Travis signed his heart, body and soul over to the Marine Corp. Travis gave his life to protect his family, friends and his country.

    Travis J. Layfield was a history buff who used to watch films on World War II on the History Channel as a boy. His grandfather was a Navy Seabee, which may have influenced his decision to join the Navy ROTC in high school. He enlisted in the Marine Corps right after high school graduation.

    Travis embraced Marine life with gusto, sporting a “Devil Dog” tattoo and a feather tattoo, symbolic of his Lakota Sioux background. His father, John Layfield is American Indian. And true to her son’s protector spirit, Travis mother Diane recalled another phone conversation in which he explained that a friend had asked him to deliver a goodbye letter to his wife, just in case. He refused, because he refused to accept that outcome. Besides, he had a better idea. “He said he wouldn’t deliver it,” his mother recalled. He said, “I’m going to take care of you.”’ Gold Star Mother Dianne Layfield- Travis ,since little guy always wanted to serve his Country. He would tell me, one day Mommy, I want to be an Officer in the Military.

    Travis loved life, and was comfortable in his own skin. He had a huge heart,and shared it in so many many ways, through out his short life.

    Travis was only in the Marines a few months, when deployed to Iraq.

    On April 6th, 2004' Travis volunteered to go out on a Mission, where another Platoon was pinned down.

    Unfortunately that horrible morning they were sent into a town, and it was an ambush. We lost 10 Incredible Marines, and a Navy Corpsman that day. 2nd Marines 4th Battalion, Magnificent Bastards.

    Our lives changed forever that day.
    We are extremely Proud of the Man, Marine, Son, Brother, Father, Uncle, and Friend Travis was.

    Travis will Never Be Forgotten, and his Legacy lives on in the Son Dylan, Travis never knew he had.

    Travis is My Hero, My Son.

    We Love you and miss you with every breath we take, till we see you again.

    Marine Lance Cpl. Travis J. Layfield 19, Serving During Operation Iraqi Freedom assigned to 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.; killed April 6, 2004 by hostile fire in Anbar province, Iraq.
